After submitting your application to volunteer, a MELA staff member will contact you to confirm receipt. Following the application deadline, the team coordinator will inform you about the status of your participation in the education event.

For our Acute Care Conferences, MELA requests a trip deposit fee of $200.00 for Physicians, $150.00 for nurses and PAs, and $75.00 for others. No deposit is required for interpreters, trainees, or those involved in Trauma Courses.

The deposit is applied toward the total cost of your trip. This is primarily used for your in-country travel during the medical education conference. If you need to cancel your participation, you have two options available:

donate the funds to the MELA General Fund,
apply the funds as a deposit toward another trip

Kindly note that once you are accepted to the MELA team, you will not be eligible for a refund of the deposit fee or any other payments made towards the cost of your trip unless the trip is canceled by MELA or our sponsors in Latin America.

As a non-profit organization with limited resources, we require volunteers to cover travel expenses to and from Latin America. If necessary, volunteers are encouraged to raise funds for their participation through personal donations from their churches, schools, and community groups. MELA sometimes provides limited grants to support travel expenses when funds are available. If you wish to apply for these funds, please click on the link provided [Travel Grant Application].

Volunteer healthcare providers who wish to gain clinical experience in rural areas must provide a valid medical license.
